Thang Tax Law in International GST/HST Book
Simon Thang, tax lawyer and principal of Thang Tax Law, has written the Canadian chapter on GST/HST and financial services in a recently published book, VAT and Financial Services: Comparative Law and Economic Perspectives (Springer, 2017)(ISBN 978-981-10-3465-7). It is available as hard copy and e-book. The book covers 6 jurisdictions including Canada, the European Union, and Australia.
The Canadian chapter includes an analysis of the challenges with applying the financial services exemption to various forms of intermediation, or “arranging for” in the Canadian terminology. Other issues covered include issues with input tax credits (ITCs) and self-assessment requirements for supplies acquired outside Canada.
